RESEARCH IN GENERAL DENTAL PRACTICE

TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR POSTERIOR TOOTH FRACTURES

The research coordinator Peter Frost has practised in general dental practice since 1969. He has taught removable prosthodontics to generations of dental students, first at the Royal Dental Hospital and from 1985 at Guy's Dental Hospital and subsequently GKT Dental Institute, King's College London. He has undertaken research into xerostomia with removable lubricating devices and in primary dental care in the fields of the placement and replacement of restorations, the reasons for the extraction of teeth, moderate pulpitis and out of hours emergency treatment. Most recently Peter has coordinated studies on posterior tooth fracture (PTF) and decisions on how to restore the broken down tooth.

He is a member of the Oral Mucosal Research Group in the Department of Oral Medicine and Pathology at GKT and is in the IADR mineralised tissue, oral medicine and pathology and dental materials research groups. He has had 18 papers published in refereed journals.

The recent project on PTF options for the treatment of the broken down tooth has been completed in a nationwide randomised questionnaire study involving 1250 general dental practitioners. This data has recently been presented at two conferences and a paper will be shortly submitted to a refereed journal. Peter's research increasingly aims to improve knowledge and understanding of the everyday clinical practice of dentistry.
